New Zealand inspiration Tui birds

New Zealand inspiration Tui birds

The Tui bird lives only in New Zealand and has special meaning to the Maori. I was entranced by their appearance, songs and voice. Much like a crow they can mimic human voices and have a huge language range. Plus those puffy white feather balls, amazing. I chose the yellow kōwhai tree and the pōhutukawa crimson blooms that they nectar on... quite the pollinators! Here are my steps to the final creation of Tui Earth Song.

The initial sketch in colored pencil.

I tried to use a different palette of colors that reflected the warmth of the people and connection to earth and preserving it for generations.

Getting there.

Adding the thin white feathers was a bit daunting.

The finished piece!!
