the rock origin story

the rock origin story

I want to share with you February's Art Subscription Box. Enjoy the video, I'm not very good at videoing the process, but you get the jest.

The rocks came from Cove Beach on the Oregon coast. The idea to create art on a stone came from this beach. First it was just for me, but then I thought, why not collect more stones to give to friends. I had no idea what I would create on the stones, but knew that it would be special and one of a kind. I spent hours scouring the coastline in search of the perfect stone. Sometimes it was treacherous with the tide coming in, but mostly it was exhilarating. The stone needed to be perfectly round to feel good in your hands and the color a soft gray to enhance the white ink. Above all else, the feeling of the stone had to be super soft, almost velvety. As I search and filled my already heavy tote bag with rocks, I wondered how long had these stones have been sitting on the beach? Did they wash up a few months ago, decades, or millions of years ago? We will never know. I love to believe the ocean gave me these beautiful stones that she sat so lovingly on the beach a very long time ago for me to find and give to you.
