Dolce Notte sul Palouse
The winter hills of my home are quiet. The dark silhouettes of lone trees on a snowy stage stand stoically waiting the next season. For now they practice their lines and rehearse their bows in the wind. The hills flow like soft endless music. Dusty window panes of an old round barn reflect the soft evening light, etched with frost. This is the Dolce Notte Sul Palouse. A sweet night on the Palouse. If you look really close you’ll see “dolce” in the moon.
History: The T.A. Leonard barn is located on the Palouse just miles from my home. It was built in 1917. It is one of approximately 20 round or polygonal barns constructed in Washington between 1890 and 1920, of which 14 remained in 2020. They were considered economical because they required 30 to 50 percent less material than rectangular barns, and they enclosed more square feet per lineal feet of wall.
This is a limited edition print from the original that was painted on a 20 x 16 x 1.5 inches canvas. Edge is painted blue-black. Acrylics, ink, colored pencil and mixed media. Old music, patterned papers and ledgers.
